Outdated Family Room

Project Overview:

The dated family room in this home didn’t meet the needs of this lively family of four.  While the room was large with high ceilings, the drab fireplace/television wall emphasized the width of the space.  The family entertains regularly, for work and pleasure, including large groups.

Outdated Family Room

A fresh, new style was desired to bring the room up to date, including a plan to reinvent the fireplace wall.  A new flat screen television was planned with the requisite need for electronic storage.  All new furniture was needed. The room needed to offer flexible seating for family and guests.

The current window treatments did not prevent glare while watching television.  The carpet was being replaced with hardwood, and an area rug was needed to soften the space.

Our Solutions

The fireplace/television wall was reinvented in a fresh, transitional style.  Tile was installed in a vertical pattern to emphasize the ceiling height, complemented by a clean lined mantle.  Custom millwork in a grid pattern was designed for the space, providing depth and interest.  Below the television is a touch latch drawer for cleverly disguised hidden electronics storage.

Two leather sectionals are mirrored on the main axis into the space.  These plush deep cushions are comfortable, while multiple pillows and throws surround guests and family in comfort.  Two storage ottomans can be moved within the space for additional seating when required.

Embroidered linen blend panels topped with a pleated valance fit the client’s style; embroidered trim provides another layer of interest.  The dual shades behind the panels offer flexible light control.  The back shades are blackout for sunny days, while the front shade has an open weave for filtered light.  Alternatively, when the shades are raised, family and guests can enjoy the view of a beautiful backyard pool area.

A textured area rug with fabric banding completes the new space.

The result is an updated transitional family room that meets the needs of these homeowners in style.
